For most road trips, Moov Mauritel is the safest first choice because its network is usually the most useful outside the main cities. Mattel performs well in urban areas, while Chinguitel is a valuable backup and the first operator to launch 5G commercially. Coverage changes from one neighbourhood, road or valley to the next, so no operator can guarantee a continuous connection.

Strong in cities
Mattel
A strong urban option, especially when most of the trip is centred on Nouakchott or another major city.
Excellent as the second network in a travelling pair so that both phones do not depend on the same coverage footprint.

Chinguitel
A useful third option and the first operator to launch commercial 5G service in Mauritania.
Its initial 5G phase covers Nouakchott and Nouadhibou. Outside those zones, plan around 4G, 3G or no signal.

The fourth operator named in the 2026 5G licensing process.
Consumer SIM and eSIM service was announced for 7 October 2026. Until retail launch is verified, do not plan a trip around it.
Buying your SIM
Go to an official operator agency in Nouakchott, Nouadhibou, Atar or another regional centre.
Bring your passport. Registration is personal and the operator may require identity verification before activation.
Ask the employee to activate a data bundle and test mobile data before you leave the counter.
Keep the SIM holder, PIN/PUK details and the recharge code. Take a photo of them for backup.
Airport availability is not guaranteed. Ask your host or guide to prepare a registered SIM if you leave the city immediately.

Where the signal disappears
Across the roughly 470 km between Nouakchott and Nouadhibou, several stretches still have no mobile data despite the towers visible along the road.
Along the Iron Ore Train and in the Adrar, a phone may connect near certain towns, mines or installations and then lose the network completely a few kilometres later.
One bar of signal is not an emergency plan.

Do not rely on hotel Wi-Fi
Some hotels and guesthouses offer usable Wi-Fi; others have none or provide a very slow connection. Check recent reviews, ask the property directly and always keep an active local SIM.
Satellite options: important limits
iPhone: Apple's satellite feature is not currently a Mauritania solution. As of 25 August 2026, Mauritania is not listed among the countries supported by Emergency SOS or Messages via satellite.
Garmin inReach: the Iridium network offers global coverage and can be relevant for a remote vehicle. Activate the subscription, test the device and configure contacts before departure.
Starlink: equipment may work technically, but commercial availability, roaming terms and Mauritanian authorisation are evolving. Do not carry or operate a terminal without confirming compliance with the provider and authorities.
Any transmitting satellite device may be regulated. Verify import and use rules before arrival, including for a Garmin or satellite phone.
5G arrived—but it is not a desert solution
Chinguitel officially launched its initial 5G phase on 10 August 2026 in Nouakchott and Nouadhibou. Mattel and Moov Mauritel have also secured licences and are progressing with rollout. For travel planning, still think in terms of 4G/3G coverage: 5G remains urban and does not remove desert dead zones.

Which SIM is best for travelling around Mauritania?
Moov Mauritel is the strongest first choice for most inland road trips because its coverage is generally the most useful beyond the main cities. Mattel often performs well in urban areas, and Chinguitel adds valuable redundancy. This is field experience, not a coverage guarantee: terrain, congestion, maintenance and the exact handset can change the result kilometre by kilometre.
Where should a visitor buy and activate a SIM?
Use an official operator agency soon after arrival and bring the original passport. Ask the staff to register and activate the SIM, load the chosen data bundle and demonstrate a working call or data session before you leave. Photograph or save the number, balance-check code, recharge method and customer-service contact.
How much data is enough for two weeks?
A light user with offline maps and occasional messaging may manage with about 6–10 GB; regular social uploads, video calls or hotspot use can justify 20 GB or more. Published Moov Mauritel bundles on this page are reference prices, not a promise. Confirm validity, included data and activation in the official agency because promotions and package codes change.
Does 5G mean there is internet across the desert?
No. Chinguitel launched its first commercial 5G phase in Nouakchott and Nouadhibou on 10 August 2026, and other operators are rolling out licensed services. That improves capacity in covered urban areas; it does not fill the long dead zones between cities, along remote tracks or on much of the iron-train corridor.
Should a couple buy two different SIM cards?
Yes, when connectivity matters. Put Mauritel in one unlocked phone and Mattel or Chinguitel in the other, rather than duplicating one network. Download maps, tickets, translations and contacts on both devices, carry a vehicle charger and power banks, and agree that a missing signal is normal—not a reason to continue onto an unknown track without navigation.
Can I rely on iPhone satellite, Garmin inReach or Starlink?
Do not assume any satellite product is automatically available or legal. Apple’s published satellite-feature availability does not currently list Mauritania. Garmin inReach may communicate through Iridium, but the device, subscription, contacts and local import/use rules must be confirmed before travel. Starlink service, roaming and authorisation can change; verify all three with the provider and Mauritanian authorities rather than making one the only emergency plan.
