Banc d'Arguin National Park stretches along the Mauritanian coast between Nouakchott and Nouadhibou. Its shallow waters, salt flats and islands shelter millions of migratory birds and the Imraguen, a coastal fishing community whose traditions go back centuries.
What you'll see
Pink flamingos, pelicans, ospreys, terns and rare desert wildlife. The Imraguen still practise their traditional cooperative fishing with dolphins helping drive mullet toward the shore.
Where to base yourself
Iwik is the main entry village. Simple guest camps run by local families allow you to spend several days exploring the islands and bird colonies by traditional sail boat (lanche).
Respect the park
This is a protected ecosystem. Stay on marked tracks, do not approach bird colonies, do not light fires outside designated areas, and always travel with a permit and local guide.
