Banc d’Arguin National Park is one of Mauritania’s most extraordinary natural areas: a vast protected coastal landscape where desert dunes, shallow waters, islands, mudflats and traditional fishing villages meet the Atlantic Ocean. Located between Nouakchott and Nouadhibou, the park is internationally known for its birdlife and is considered one of the world’s most important areas for nesting birds and Palearctic migratory waders. Its calm shallow waters and wide tidal flats create a unique environment for flamingos, pelicans, terns and many other coastal bird species. The park is also home to the Imraguen communities, traditionally known for their relationship with the sea and their fishing culture. Visiting Banc d’Arguin is not a classic beach trip: it is a remote, slow and raw experience that requires planning, local coordination, water, fuel, the right vehicle and respect for the park’s rules. For travelers, Banc d’Arguin is best experienced with local support: a 4x4 route, a coastal stop, a village visit when appropriate, birdwatching, photography, and carefully planned logistics. Conditions can change quickly depending on sand, tides, wind, access points and local authorizations.
Local tips
Go early and keep the itinerary flexible. The experience is better when planned around light, wind, tides and local advice. For photography, sunrise and late afternoon are the strongest moments. The landscapes can look completely different depending on tide level and visibility. Do not rely only on Google Maps. Local route knowledge matters, especially around sandy tracks, coastal access points and protected areas. If you plan to sleep nearby, confirm the camp or accommodation before leaving the main road. Carry cash, offline maps, power bank and extra drinking water.
Safety notes
Banc d’Arguin is remote and should not be approached like a normal beach stop. Travelers should confirm the route locally before departure, carry enough water, fuel, food and a spare tire, and avoid driving alone into soft sand or tidal zones. Fuel, food and mechanical help are not guaranteed inside or near the park. Mobile signal can be weak or unavailable in some areas. Always inform someone of your route and expected return time. Respect protected-area rules, local communities and wildlife. Do not drive randomly on sensitive coastal areas, do not disturb birds, do not leave waste, and confirm any camping, filming, drone use or boat activity with local authorities or trusted local partners.
