Arkeiss

Arkeiss is a small Imraguen fishing village on the Atlantic shore of the Parc National du Banc d'Arguin, in the northern part of the park between Cap Timiris and the Baie du Lévrier. Like the other Imraguen settlements along this coast, it is a working place first: a scatter of low houses and shelters, boats drawn up on the sand, nets and drying racks, and a daily rhythm set by tide, wind and catch rather than by visitors. The setting is what makes it remarkable. Banc d'Arguin is a UNESCO World Heritage site and Ramsar wetland where shallow lagoons, sandbanks and seagrass beds meet the edge of the Sahara, and it is one of the most important wintering grounds for migratory shorebirds in the world. Arkeiss sits inside that protected landscape, so everything here — access, movement, fishing and photography — happens under park rules rather than ordinary open-country conditions. Mauritanian Eye lists Arkeiss because it is a real, named place inside the park that travellers ask about, not because it is set up for tourism. There is no visitor infrastructure to describe honestly, and we have not yet been able to confirm on the ground who to contact locally, what the current park access procedure is, or whether any accommodation or guiding is available from the village itself. Arkeiss lies inside the Parc National du Banc d'Arguin, and park access in Mauritania is regulated: entry conditions, permitted routes and any fee or escort requirement are set by the park authority and can change. Confirm the current procedure with the park administration, or through an operator who works in the park regularly, before committing to a plan. Practically, this is deep-coast desert travel. Expect 4x4 tracks and tide-dependent beach driving, no fuel or resupply at the village, and long distances between settlements. Travel with a driver who knows this coast and the tides, carry your own water, fuel and food, and treat mobile coverage as unreliable. Visiting responsibly

Arkeiss is a home and a workplace, not an attraction. Ask before photographing people, boats, houses or catch, accept a refusal without insisting, and keep visits short so daily fishing work is not interrupted. Stay on established tracks, keep well away from roosting and feeding birds, do not drive across sandbanks or seagrass flats, take every piece of waste out with you, and follow whatever the park authority and your guide tell you on the day — their instructions override anything written here.
