Trarza lies in southwestern Mauritania between Nouakchott and the Senegal River, a region where Saharan dunes meet the river's delta wetlands. It contains part of the Parc National du Diawling, a Ramsar wetland reserve of mangroves and lagoons that hosts large numbers of migratory birds, as well as historic river towns such as Rosso, the main border crossing to Senegal. The old town of Boutilimit and Saharan dune fields further inland add a drier, more classically desert character to parts of the region. Travellers here can combine two very different landscapes: birdwatching in the Diawling wetlands, where pelicans, flamingos and herons gather in season, and short dune excursions inland around Boutilimit, historically known as a centre of Islamic scholarship. Rosso itself is a practical rather than scenic stop, mainly used for the river crossing into Senegal.
