Nouakchott-Sud forms the southern part of the capital region, including districts that lead out toward the road to Rosso and the Senegal River valley. Like the rest of Nouakchott, it has grown quickly from waves of rural migration, and its neighbourhoods mix established residential areas with newer, less-planned settlements at the city's fringes. It also borders the northern buffer zone of Parc National du Diawling, part of the wider Senegal River delta wetlands system. Most travellers pass through Nouakchott-Sud on the way south rather than stopping specifically here, but it offers a look at the capital's southern working-class neighbourhoods and serves as the departure point for trips toward the river towns and the Senegalese border at Rosso.
