Nouakchott-Ouest covers the coastal heart of the capital, including the city centre, the port area and the long Atlantic beach that runs along its western edge. This is where most of Nouakchott's government buildings, main market, embassies and hotels are concentrated, making it the region most travellers actually spend time in. The Port de Peche, the capital's traditional fishing port, sits within this district and is one of the city's most vivid working scenes. Visitors come here for the colourful chaos of the fishing port at day's end, when pirogues land their catch and the beach turns into an open-air fish market, as well as for the central market streets and the capital's main mosque. It's the most walkable and visitor-oriented part of Nouakchott, though still a working capital rather than a tourist town.
