Overview

Nouakchott-Nord is one of three regions that make up the capital, covering the city's northern districts along the road toward Nouadhibou. It is a mix of residential neighbourhoods, growing suburbs and light industry, reflecting Nouakchott's rapid expansion from a small colonial-era town into a capital of well over a million people. The area includes some of the newer, less central parts of the city. For visitors, Nouakchott-Nord is less about sights than about daily life on the capital's edge: neighbourhood markets, mosques, and the sandy, wide streets typical of a city still growing into its urban form. It's a practical rather than picturesque part of the capital, generally seen in passing en route to or from the northern highway.
