Inchiri is Mauritania's smallest region by population, a stretch of stony hamada and coastal desert between Nouakchott and Nouadhibou. Its main settlement, Akjoujt, grew up around copper and gold mining, and the surrounding landscape of dark volcanic hills and open plains is sparsely inhabited, crossed mainly by the coastal road and mining routes. Little of the region is set up for visitors, and its character is industrial and pastoral rather than monumental. For travellers driving the Nouakchott-Nouadhibou road, Inchiri is mostly a stark, wide-open landscape passed through rather than lingered in, though the area around Akjoujt holds ancient copper-working sites that point to a long mining history predating the modern operations.
