Brakna stretches along the Senegal River valley in southern Mauritania, a region of floodplain farmland, acacia savanna and the seasonal Aftout lowlands to its north. The river brings a greener, more agricultural character than the Saharan regions, with rice paddies, market gardens and herding communities living alongside Pulaar, Soninke and Moor villages. Aleg, the regional capital, sits inland on a route linking Nouakchott to the river towns. The region is not set up for sightseeing tourism, but it offers a genuine sense of riverine Sahelian Mauritania: fishing villages along the Senegal River, birdlife in the wetlands during migration season, and a rhythm of life tied to the annual flood rather than to caravans or dunes. Roads and accommodation are basic outside the main towns.
