Adrar is Mauritania's most storied desert region, a plateau of ochre cliffs, palm-filled oasis valleys and wind-carved dunes rising north of the capital. It holds two of the country's ancient caravan cities, Chinguetti and Ouadane, once way-stations for salt caravans and centres of Islamic scholarship whose stone libraries still hold medieval manuscripts. The Amogjar and Adrar plateaus give way to the great Erg Ouarane dune sea further west. Travellers come here for the combination of desert scenery and tangible history: walking the sand-choked lanes of old Chinguetti, visiting family manuscript libraries, and driving or trekking among dunes and rocky guelbs. Nights are cold and skies exceptionally clear, making stargazing a highlight. The regional capital, Atar, serves as the practical base for onward trips, with modest guesthouses and 4x4 outfitters rather than resort infrastructure.
