Tiris Zemmour Desert
An immense, sparsely populated stretch of hammada and dune desert in Mauritania's far north, defined by mining tracks, rocky plateaus and long horizons.
Information can change. Always confirm locally. Read our travel disclaimer.
The desert of Tiris Zemmour occupies the northernmost reaches of Mauritania, a region of flat stony hammada, scattered rocky outcrops and occasional dune fields that stretches toward the borders with Western Sahara and Algeria. It is one of the emptiest parts of an already sparsely populated country, shaped as much by mining activity, most notably around Zouérat and Kediet Ijill, as by the nomadic life that has moved through it for centuries. For travellers, this is desert in its most stripped-down form: wide gravel plains, distant escarpments, and a silence broken mainly by the occasional passage of mining trucks or the iron ore train crossing the landscape. It rewards those drawn to genuine remoteness and stark geology rather than classic dune scenery, though dune areas do exist within the wider region. Infrastructure is minimal to nonexistent away from the towns, distances between water and fuel are considerable, and parts of the region lie close to sensitive border zones, so travel here demands serious preparation, a capable vehicle, and up-to-date local information on access and conditions.

Planning this visit
Explore this desert only with an experienced guide and a well-equipped 4x4, based out of Zouérat or Fderik. Allow several days for any meaningful exploration given the distances involved, and travel in cooler months. Confirm current access conditions, as parts of the region border sensitive zones.
Visiting responsibly
Travel with local guides who know safe routes and border sensitivities, minimise tracks across virgin desert surfaces, and ask permission before photographing any nomadic camps or individuals encountered along the way.
