Tichitt is one of Mauritania's four historic ksour and arguably the most remote and least visited of them, perched at the edge of the Sahara where the Tagant plateau meets the dunes. It was founded around a thousand years ago as a stop on trans-Saharan salt and trade routes, and its stonework, using dark local rock rather than the mudbrick more typical elsewhere, gives it a distinctive, almost fortress-like appearance. What draws the rare visitor here is precisely its isolation and authenticity: a caravan town that has changed little in feel, surrounded by dramatic desert scenery and encroaching sand, with a small population maintaining a fraction of its former extent. There are no visitor facilities in any conventional sense, and reaching it is an expedition rather than an excursion. Tichitt's isolation is also its greatest vulnerability: the site faces serious conservation pressures from desertification and depopulation, and infrastructure, water and services are minimal to nonexistent. It suits only well-prepared, experienced desert travellers accompanied by knowledgeable local guides, and conditions should always be verified locally before attempting the journey.
