Nouakchott Fish Market

Nouakchott's fish market, near the port de pêche on the city's northern shoreline, is one of the most vivid working scenes in the capital. Before sunrise and through the morning, brightly painted wooden pirogues return from the Atlantic, and a chaotic, highly organised chain of fishermen, porters and fishmongers takes over: fish are sorted, weighed, iced and hauled off in wheelbarrows and pickup trucks toward markets across the city and beyond. For visitors, it is as much a spectacle as a market — the colours of the boats, the calls of the traders, and the sheer volume of fish landed each day speak to how central this stretch of Atlantic coast is to Mauritania's economy. Photography opportunities are excellent, though the ground is wet, slippery and strewn with fish scraps, and the smell is strong. It is a working site, not a tourist attraction, so visitors should expect crowding, minimal facilities and a fast-paced, sometimes overwhelming atmosphere rather than a curated experience.

Planning this visit

Located a short taxi ride from central Nouakchott; arrive early morning, shortly after sunrise, to see boats landing and the market at its busiest. An hour or two is enough for a visit, and sturdy closed shoes are recommended given the wet, uneven ground.

Visiting responsibly

Ask fishermen and traders before photographing them up close, and avoid blocking the narrow working paths between boats. Buying a small amount of fish or supporting a nearby stall is a welcome, respectful gesture.
