Nouakchott City Center

The commercial heart of Nouakchott, a compact grid of markets, banks and administrative buildings where most of the capital's everyday business gets done.

Overview

The city center around Avenue Gamal Abdel Nasser and the surrounding blocks is where Nouakchott's daily commerce concentrates: money-changers, phone-credit stalls, tailors, and the covered Marché Capitale with its rows of jewellery, leather goods and fabric. It is dense, noisy and largely unplanned in feel, a contrast to the wide empty avenues elsewhere in the city. Walking here gives a quick sense of Mauritanian urban life — the mix of Moorish and Sub-Saharan African communities, the presence of both traditional dress and modern commerce, and the informal economy that keeps the city running. Shops and stalls trade in everything from imported electronics to traditional silver jewellery and indigo-dyed cloth. It is not designed for leisurely tourism: pavements are uneven, traffic and dust can be intense, and there are few signs in English. But for travellers wanting an unfiltered look at how the capital actually functions, rather than a curated old town, the city center delivers that directly.

Planning this visit

Easily reached on foot or by taxi from most hotels in Nouakchott, which are generally within a few kilometres of the center. Visit in the cooler morning hours to avoid peak heat and crowding; half a day is plenty to browse the main streets and markets.

Visiting responsibly

Bargain politely and expect it as normal practice, but do so without pressure or aggression. Keep valuables discreet in crowded market lanes and ask permission before photographing stallholders.
