Néma

Néma sits at the eastern terminus of Mauritania's main paved highway, deep in the Hodh Ech Chargui region near the border with Mali. It has long served as a garrison, administrative and market town for a vast, sparsely populated hinterland, and its layout and pace reflect that role rather than any tourism orientation. Few independent travellers linger in Néma itself; its significance is mostly as the last major supply and transit point before the tracks leading toward Oualata and the deep desert beyond. The town's markets and mix of communities offer a glimpse of a genuinely frontier Mauritania, far removed from the coast and the more visited north. Because of its remoteness, limited infrastructure, and proximity to the border, Néma requires careful planning: fuel, spare parts and communications should not be assumed to be reliably available further on, and travellers should check current conditions locally, including regarding onward routes and the border area, before continuing.

Néma is reached by paved road from Ayoun el Atrous and Nouakchott, a long multi-day drive from the capital. Beyond Néma, tracks require a capable 4x4 and an experienced local driver.
