Kaédi

Kaédi is one of the larger towns of the Senegal River valley, serving as the capital of the Gorgol region and a commercial centre for the irrigated farmland that surrounds it. Its position on the river has long made it a meeting point for Halpulaar, Soninké and other communities of the valley, and this diversity shows in its market, crafts and daily rhythms. Travellers come for a more substantial taste of river-valley urban life than smaller towns offer: a large, busy market selling produce, textiles and household goods, workshops producing dyed and woven cloth, and riverside activity including fishing and, seasonally, boat traffic. It is a practical base for exploring the wider Gorgol region and its farming villages. Kaédi is a working city rather than a preserved heritage site, so its interest lies in observing everyday commerce and craft rather than visiting curated monuments. Heat and dust are pronounced for much of the year, and travellers should expect a genuine, unpolished urban experience.

Planning this visit

Kaédi is accessible by paved road from Nouakchott via Boghé, a day's drive, or from Nouakchott via the more southerly route; a standard vehicle is sufficient. Allow at least a half-day to explore the market and riverfront, more if visiting surrounding villages.

Ask permission before photographing artisans, vendors or their goods, negotiate purchases respectfully, and consider buying textiles directly from workshops to support local craftspeople.
