Iwik

Iwik is one of the main villages of the Imraguen, the seminomadic fishing people who have lived along the Banc d'Arguin coast for generations. Set on a small peninsula within the national park, it consists of simple houses, drying racks for fish, and traditional sailing boats drawn up on the shore, with the wider bay and its sandbanks stretching out beyond. The village often serves as a starting point to observe the traditional dolphin-assisted fishing, a rare practice in which fishermen beat the water to signal wild dolphins, which then drive schools of mullet toward hand-held nets. Iwik is also a practical base for exploring the surrounding channels by lanche and observing the park's bird colonies. Life in Iwik remains basic, without constant electricity or shops, and visitors should expect very simple accommodation, often with a family or in a modest camp. It is precisely this authenticity, far from tourist development, that is both the village's appeal and its main limitation.

Reached by 4x4 track from within the Banc d'Arguin park, usually as part of an organised park visit with a guide. Plan an overnight stay to see the dolphin fishing at the right tide, and travel outside the hottest months.

Ask before photographing fishermen, families or homes, and let the community set the pace of any fishing demonstration. Bring only what you need and avoid straining the village's very limited water and food resources.
