Overview

Diawling National Park lies in the far southwest of Mauritania, on the Senegal River delta near the border with Senegal, and forms part of a cross-border wetland system that includes Senegal's Djoudj park on the opposite bank. Created to counter the ecological damage caused by upstream damming, it has restored seasonal flooding to a network of ponds, floodplains and mangrove stands. The park is a significant refuge for waterbirds, including pelicans, flamingos, herons and large numbers of migratory species that use the Senegal River delta as a stopover or wintering ground, making it a rewarding, low-key destination for birdwatchers and anyone drawn to wetland landscapes rather than desert scenery. Wildlife such as warthogs and various antelope species can also be seen. Infrastructure is limited and the park receives relatively few visitors compared with Banc d'Arguin, which is part of its appeal for those seeking a quieter, more intimate encounter with Mauritania's greener, wetter south, but travellers should come prepared with a guide and realistic expectations of facilities.

Planning this visit

Reached by road from Nouakchott via Rosso, then local tracks into the park, ideally with a park guide who knows the seasonal water levels. Allow one to two days, and visit in the cooler, drier months for the best birdwatching.

Visiting responsibly

Keep a respectful distance from nesting and feeding birds, follow guide routes to protect fragile floodplain vegetation, and support local guides and communities who manage the park's resources.
