Choum is a small, windswept settlement in the Adrar region whose main claim to fame is the railway line running between the iron-ore mines of Zouerate and the port of Nouadhibou. The trains, often exceeding two kilometres in length, pass through Choum daily, and it is here that many independent travellers board, riding in open ore wagons alongside the cargo for a genuinely rugged, memorable rail journey across the desert. There is little to Choum itself beyond the tracks, a scatter of houses, and the vehicles gathered to meet arriving or departing passengers; its interest is almost entirely bound up with the train experience rather than the town. Travellers typically pass through briefly, either arriving from Atar to catch the train toward Nouadhibou, or disembarking here after a night in the wagons to continue by road into the Adrar. Conditions on the train are basic and exposed: no seating, no shelter from wind or iron dust, and long hours of darkness and cold at night. It is not a comfortable experience, but for those seeking an unusual, authentic slice of Mauritanian desert life and industry, it is a distinctive one.
