Information can change. Always confirm locally. Read our travel disclaimer.
Cap Blanc, known locally as Ras Nouadhibou, forms the tip of the peninsula shared between Mauritania and Western Sahara, where sheer cliffs drop into the Atlantic and the desert meets the sea in dramatic fashion. The headland is best known for sheltering one of the last surviving colonies of the critically endangered Mediterranean monk seal, which hauls out on the rocky coves below the cliffs. Beyond the seals, the cape offers wide, largely empty beaches, strong Atlantic light and a sense of remoteness that is rare even by Mauritanian standards. It is a place for walking, birdwatching and quiet contemplation rather than active tourism, with no real infrastructure on site. Access can be complicated by the cape's position near a sensitive border and the presence of military zones, so visits typically require local arrangement and advance planning. Travellers should not expect facilities, shade or services, and should treat the seal colony's habitat with particular caution given how fragile the population is.

Planning this visit
Reached by 4x4 from Nouadhibou with local arrangement, given the cape's proximity to a sensitive border and military presence. Best visited as a half-day or day trip; check locally on access conditions before setting out.
Visiting responsibly
Keep well back from the monk seal colony and avoid noise or sudden movement near the cliffs. Never approach military zones, and photograph the coastline rather than any installations, always with discretion.
